Spinach Smoothie

This recipe is just one of many kid-friendly smoothie combinations. The secret is to choose mild vegetables like spinach, carrots or beets, and balance the mixture with sweet fruits such as pears, bananas, blueberries, and oranges. A fun idea is to freeze pear slices in advance. It adds a yummy frosty touch. Note: if your blender is on the meek side, chop up tougher veggies into smaller pieces.

You’ll need:

  • 1 packed cup spinach leaves
  • 1 avocado, chopped
  • 1 large Bartlett pear, sliced
  • 1 frozen banana, chopped
  • 1-1/4 cup orange juice
  • 1-1/4 cup ice

Put the orange juice in first, it will help the blender blades spin freely. Add spinach and avocado, and pulse-blend a little. Then add pear and banana and pulse again.

Finally add the ice.

If your blender has speeds, start it on low to break up big pieces of fruit, then work your way up to high speed for a puree.
