Succulent Care: Sunlight, Watering, and More

Succulents are some of the most resilient and visually striking plants, but to keep them thriving, it’s important to understand their specific care needs. From proper sunlight to watering techniques, a little attention goes a long way in maintaining their vibrant colors and compact growth. Here’s everything you need to know to keep your succulents happy and healthy!

Sunlight: The Key to Vibrant Colors

Sunlight plays a major role in keeping succulents compact and colorful. The process of sun-stressing—exposing succulents to bright light—can enhance their beautiful shades of pink, red, purple, and even orange.

  • In our greenhouse, succulents receive 8-10 hours of sunlight in summer and 6-7 hours in winter to maintain their rich hues.
  • Indoors, place your succulents near a south-facing window or use grow lights to mimic natural light conditions.

If your succulent looks stretched or pale, it’s likely not getting enough light. Gradually increase exposure to prevent sunburn and help it regain a more compact shape.

Temperature: Why Day-Night Swings Matter

Succulents love temperature variations between day and night, a process called cold-stressing, which can bring out deeper, more intense colors.

  • In our greenhouse during winter, succulents experience a 20-30°F temperature difference between day and night.
  • Most succulents need temperatures above 40°F to prevent cold damage, so if you’re keeping them outdoors, be sure to bring them inside before frost hits.

Providing these natural temperature changes will promote healthier growth and improve their overall appearance.

Watering: Finding the Right Balance

Watering succulents can be tricky, but following the soak and dry method will keep them hydrated without the risk of root rot.

Two Ways to Water:

1) Top Watering:

  • Slowly pour water onto the soil until it starts flowing from the drainage holes.
  • Be mindful that even if water drains from the bottom, the middle layers of soil may still be dry—so water generously.

2) Bottom Watering:

  • Place the planter in a shallow tray of water.
  • Let the soil absorb moisture from the bottom up for several hours, until the top layer becomes moist.

Important: Always allow the soil to fully dry before watering again. Succulents store water in their leaves, so they can handle dry spells better than overwatering.

Fertilizer: Do Succulents Need It?

Surprisingly, succulents don’t require fertilizer! With the right combination of sunlight and proper watering, they will grow naturally and thrive without any extra feeding.

If you want to encourage faster growth, you can use a diluted succulent fertilizer in spring and summer, but it’s completely optional.

Keep Your Succulents Thriving

By providing proper light, temperature shifts, and mindful watering, your succulents will stay healthy and colorful all year long. Whether you’re keeping them indoors or outdoors, following these simple care tips will help them flourish!
