Bromeliads: Bright, Bold, and Surprisingly Easy
If you’re looking for a plant that makes a statement without demanding much in return, bromeliads are the perfect choice. With their striking foliage, long-lasting flowers, and tropical flair, they bring color and energy to any room. But beyond their beauty, bromeliads have some impressive benefits that make them worth a spot in your home or office.

Even Abby, our resident crabby tabby, loves Bromeliad!
Why Bromeliads Are More Than Just Pretty Plants
Most houseplants improve air quality, but bromeliads go a step further—they release oxygen and filter the air even at night. That means they can help you breathe easier, sleep better, and wake up refreshed.
In workspaces, bromeliads are known to boost focus and productivity. Their vivid colors and unique forms bring a spark of creativity, making them an excellent choice for desks, conference rooms, and common areas. And since bromeliads are both low maintenance and long lasting, they deliver these benefits without adding another chore to your to-do list.
Meet the Bromeliad Varieties Arriving Fresh at Mahoney’s

Aechmea fasciata
We’re excited to welcome a new shipment of some of the most stunning bromeliad varieties:
- Guzmania – Famous for their bold, upright flower spikes in shades of red, orange, yellow, and pink. These tropical beauties instantly brighten a room.
- Neoregelia – Grown for their brilliant foliage rather than flowers. Their leaves often blush into bright reds and pinks, creating a living work of art.
- Vriesea – Known for their “flaming sword” flower spikes, these are true showstoppers with striking vertical blooms.
- Aechmea fasciata (Urn Plant) – Recognizable by its silvery patterned leaves and soft pink flower bracts, it’s one of the most classic and reliable bromeliads you’ll find.
How to Care for Bromeliads
Despite their exotic looks, bromeliads are incredibly simple to care for (and check out our printable care guide for them here!):
- Light: Bright, indirect light is best. They can tolerate some shade, but vibrant colors show most in good light.
- Water: Most bromeliads have a central cup or “tank” formed by their rosette of leaves. Keep this cup filled with fresh water, refreshing it regularly to prevent stagnation. Water the soil lightly as well, allowing it to drain well, as Bromeliads prefer to dry out between waterings. Bromeliads are sensitive to salts, so if possible water with distilled water.
- Humidity: They love moderate to high humidity but adapt well to typical household levels. Misting occasionally can help, especially in drier months.
- Soil: A light, fast-draining potting mix (like orchid bark blended with peat) works best. Avoid heavy soils that hold too much water.
- Fertilizer: Use a diluted all-purpose fertilizer or specialized orchid food like Espoma Orchid!, applied at half strength, only during the growing season. Over-fertilizing can harm
the plant.
The Long-Lasting Bonus
Unlike many flowering plants, bromeliads can hold their colorful bracts for weeks to months, providing long-lasting beauty. While each plant blooms only once, new “pups” (baby plants) grow from the base and can be repotted to continue the cycle. That means your bromeliad can keep giving for years to come.
