VIDEO: How to Plant an Indoor Winter Herb Garden

Mahoney’s herbs expert Carol shares tips about indoor herbs

An indoor winter herb garden keeps fresh flavor close at hand all season long. You can keep herbs in individual pots or group several together in one planter.

Start with healthy starter plants. Use a small, shallow pot with a drainage hole. Choose well-draining soil to protect the roots. Rotate pots often so plants grow evenly in winter light. Place herbs in the brightest spot you can find.

Avoid common mistakes. Keep herbs away from cold drafts. Don’t overwater or overfertilize. Always water at the base of the plant, not on the leaves.

Different herbs have different needs. Basil and rosemary prefer drier soil, and basil benefits from frequent pinching. Rosemary also needs good air circulation. Bay and mint like more moisture, but keep mint in its own pot. Olive plant offers a fun surprise with its olive-like scent and prefers evenly moist soil. Lavender and curry provide fragrance and pair well together. Lemon balm, lemongrass, and lemon thyme add fresh citrus notes, with lemon balm tolerating lower light.
