Lawn Care Calendar: What to Do for a Healthy Lawn Year-Round
A beautiful lawn doesn’t happen by accident—it takes the right steps, at the right time, all year long! And if you want lush, green grass in summer and fall, it all starts with what you do in spring. This season is the foundation for success, setting the stage for strong roots, thick growth, and fewer weeds throughout the year.
Here’s your full-year lawn care calendar, with a special focus on spring tasks that will give your lawn the best start possible.
Spring: Set the Foundation for a Healthy Lawn
Early Spring (March – April)
Winter takes a toll on your lawn, and early spring is the time to clean up and prepare for new growth.
✔ Start with a Cleanup – Remove leaves, sticks, and debris that have built up over winter. This helps sunlight reach the grass and prevents mold or disease.
✔ Check for Snow Mold & Lawn Damage – If you notice matted-down patches of grass, rake them gently to encourage new growth.
✔ Apply Jonathan Green Veri-Green with Crabgrass Preventer – If crabgrass was an issue last year, prevent it before it starts! This product feeds your lawn while stopping crabgrass seeds from sprouting. (Tip: Apply when soil temps reach 50–55°F for best results, this is generally when the air temp is consistently 60-65°F.)
✔ Fix Bare Patches – Rake and loosen the soil in thin or bare spots. If reseeding is needed, use Jonathan Green Black Beauty Ultra for the best results.
Mid-to-Late Spring (April – May)
Now that your lawn is waking up, it’s time to strengthen it and outcompete weeds.
✔ Feed Your Lawn – Apply Jonathan Green Veri-Green Lawn Food to give your grass the nutrients it needs to grow strong, thick, and green.
✔ Control Weeds – If weeds like dandelions and clover start popping up, spot-treat with Jonathan Green Lawn Weed Control to keep them in check.
✔ Mow Smart – As grass starts growing, keep your mower blades sharp and adjust the height to 3-4 inches to encourage deeper roots and shade out weeds.
Summer: Maintain & Protect Your Lawn
✔ Mow High & Water Deep – Keep grass at 3-4 inches and water deeply (about 1 inch per week) to help roots grow strong.
✔ Feed Again in Late Summer – Apply Jonathan Green Summer Survival to replenish nutrients lost in heat and drought and control surface feeding insects.
✔ Prevent Grubs – Apply Grub & Insect Control in late June or early July to stop grubs before they damage your lawn.
Fall: The Best Time for Lawn Improvement
✔ Aerate & Overseed – Fall is the best time to seed! Use Jonathan Green Black Beauty Ultra to fill in bare spots and thicken the lawn.
✔ Fertilize for Winter Strength – Apply Jonathan Green Winter Survival Fall Lawn Food to help roots stay strong through winter.
✔ Remove Leaves Regularly – A thick layer of leaves blocks sunlight and invites disease. Mulch them with your mower or rake them up.
Winter: Prep for the Year Ahead
✔ Keep Your Lawn Clear – Avoid heavy foot traffic and clear off any debris or tools left out.
✔ Get Ready for Spring – Start planning your early spring lawn care tasks so you can hit the ground running as temperatures warm up.
