Going on Vacation? Here’s How to Help Your Plants

Vacation season is underway! Whether you’re heading to the Cape for a long weekend or taking a two-week getaway, it’s perfectly reasonable to worry about what your garden, containers, and houseplants will look like when you return.

The good news? With a little planning, most plants can handle a short trip just fine. A few simple steps before you leave can make all the difference and help you come home to healthy, thriving plants instead of wilted ones.

Start with a deep watering

One of the most important steps you can take before leaving is give your plants a thorough, deep watering.

For garden beds, water slowly so moisture reaches several inches into the soil. For containers, water until it flows from those drainage holes, ensuring the entire root ball is saturated.

Avoid waiting until the morning you leave because chances are you will be rushing around. Water the evening before or early on departure day so plants begin your trip well hydrated.

ask a friend or neighbor to help

If you will be away for more than a few days, having someone check on your plants is one of the best solutions.

Rather than simply asking them to water every day, encourage them to:

  • Check the soil before watering.
  • Water deeply when needed.
  • Focus on containers, hanging baskets, vegetables, and newly planted trees and shrubs first.

Providing a quick walkthrough before you leave can prevent both overwatering and underwatering.

use self watering solutions

If you don’t have someone available to help, there are several products that can provide supplemental water while you’re away.

Plant Nanny wine bottle in barrel planter

Plant nanny

Plant Nannies slowly release water from an inverted bottle into the soil as it dries. They are an excellent option for houseplants, patio pots, and smaller containers.

water globes

Watering globes work similarly by gradually releasing water into the soil over several days. While they aren’t intended for larger containers, they can help extend the time between waterings for many houseplants and decorative pots.

COnsider a timed irrigation system

If you travel frequently or have a large collection of containers, a timer attached to a drip irrigation or soaker hose system can be a worthwhile investment.

These systems deliver water automatically on a schedule, helping maintain consistent soil moisture while conserving water compared to overhead sprinklers.

group containers together

Before leaving, gather patio pots and containers into one area.

Grouping plants together creates a slightly more humid microclimate, helping reduce moisture loss. It also makes watering much easier if someone is stopping by to help.

move containers out of the afternoon sun

If possible, relocate your potted plants to a spot that receives morning sun and afternoon shade.

A few days with slightly less sunlight is far less stressful than several days of intense afternoon heat without enough water. Avoid moving plants into deep shade if they normally grow in full sun. Just reducing the hottest part of the day can make a big difference.

skip the fertilizer before you leave

It may seem like a good idea to fertilize before vacation, but it is usually better to wait until you return.

Fertilizer encourages new growth, which increases a plant’s demand for water. Waiting until you are home allows you to support that new growth with regular watering.

harvest vegtables and deadhead flowers

Before heading out, harvest ripe vegetables, remove faded blooms, and trim away any dead foliage.

Harvesting ripe produce encourages many vegetables to continue producing, while deadheading flowering annuals helps redirect energy into new blooms instead of seed production.

What about houseplants?

Most houseplants are surprisingly forgiving.

Water them thoroughly before you leave, move them out of direct sun if possible, and group them together to help reduce that moisture loss. For longer trips, consider using a watering globe or ask a friend to check on them once during your vacation.

Enjoy your vacation!

A little preparation goes a long way. By watering deeply, reducing stress from heat and sun, and arranging a backup watering plan if needed, you can enjoy your vacation knowing your plants have the best chance of thriving until you return.
